The Many Benefits of Growing African Mask Plant in Your Garden

The African mask plant, also known as Alocasia, is gaining popularity as an exotic and unique houseplant. But did you know that this tropical beauty also thrives when grown outdoors in the garden? I was first drawn to the striking foliage and wanted to add something different to my indoor plant collection. After doing more research, I realized there are so many benefits to having African mask plants in my outdoor space as well.

In this article I’ll share why I think everyone should grow these stunning plants in their gardens and how they can provide natural solutions for common garden problems.

An Exotic Look for Your Garden

One of the main reasons I initially loved the African mask plant was its exotic and tropical appearance. The large, lush leaves have pronounced white or green veins that stand out dramatically against the dark green or almost black background. This creates a very bold, artistic look.

When planted among your other garden plantings, African mask brings something totally unique. It has an almost prehistoric or sci-fi vibe. The leaves can get over 2 feet long, so it makes a big statement.

I love using them as focal points or thrill elements in garden beds and containers. They always draw attention and questions from guests.

Natural Pest Control

A major benefit I discovered after incorporating African mask plants into my garden is that they help repel pests! Now that’s a perk I can get on board with

The leaves contain microscopic crystals called raphides that are toxic to many garden pests like aphids, mealybugs, slugs, and snails when ingested. So simply having them around can help deter these annoying bugs in a natural way.

I’ve definitely noticed less issues with pests on some of my other garden plants since adding my Alocasias. And not having to use as many chemical treatments is better for our family and the environment.

Adds Humidity

Another fantastic benefit of African mask plants is that they release moisture into the air through their large leaves. This helps naturally increase humidity around them.

I used to have issues with dry air affecting some of my other tropical plants that preferred higher humidity. The Alocasias have helped provide the moisture these plants love without having to set up misters.

And I’ve found I’m able to grow even more plants that want humidity, like ferns and begonias, in the same beds as my African mask plants.

Beautiful Tropical-Style Privacy Screen

With their potential to grow up to 6 feet tall and wide, African mask makes a wonderful privacy screen. I love using them as a living fence or border.

The big, bold leaves create a lush, tropical look that instantly makes you feel like you’re in the jungle. And they grow relatively quickly once established so you don’t have to wait years for the desired privacy.

Much better than plain old boring fences or walls! Going with a living screen gives you all the seclusion along with lovely greenery and exotic style.

Adds Organic Matter to Soil

As the leaves grow and die back over time, they break down to add beneficial organic material into the surrounding soil. This organic matter helps improve moisture retention and nutrients in the earth.

Any garden bed or planter that contains African mask plants will have soil that is richer in nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from the decomposing plant material.

This means your other nearby plants will also benefit from the improved soil conditions!

Gorgeous Tropical Container Thriller

With their huge, showy leaves, African mask plants are ideal for using as thriller elements in container plantings. Their exotic good looks provide ample visual excitement.

I like to pair them with other tropical-looking plants like cordylines, crotons, coleus and caladiums. Contrasting colors and textures next to the bold Alocasia leaves creates a stunning tropical container garden.

And you get the benefits of pest control, humidity and added organic matter in a concentrated space when planted in pots and planters. Easy to move into prime display locations as well!

Provide Shade and Cooling Effects

The large leaves of African mask plants are perfect for casting dappled shade on gardens. I use mine around shorter plants that could use a break from hot summer sun.

Their towering height and spread creates nice cooling shade under the canopy of leaves. And any filtered sunlight that does sneak through creates a beautiful luminous glow.

Having these shady respites allows me to grow more varieties of plants that would otherwise get scorched or dried out in full hot sun. I don’t have to worry so much about harsh afternoon rays.

Gorgeous Cut Foliage

While they aren’t grown specifically for cut flowers, African mask plants provide stunning tropical cut foliage. Their artistic leaves work beautifully in floral arrangements.

I love adding just one or two of the long leaves to give a fresh, modern look to bouquets. The dark color and lean shape contrasts wonderfully with many flower types.

So you get decorative elements for indoors in addition to all the other garden benefits. Just be sure to keep them out of reach of kids and pets since they are toxic if ingested.

Low Maintenance Once Established

One of the things I appreciate most about African mask plants is that they are pretty low maintenance once planted and established. As long as you provide the basic care they need, they’ll keep growing and spreading nicely on their own.

The most important thing is to give them the warm temperatures, filtered sunlight and moist soil they love. Add some slow release fertilizer a couple times during the growing season and they’re good to go!

Keep them pruned when necessary and enjoy those wonderful exotic leaves. Much easier than fussing with plants that need constant attention and primping.

Provide Support for Climbing Plants

The upright stalks of African mask plants are perfect for providing support for vining plants like climbing roses, vines and beans. Simply plant at the base and let them grow up around the sturdy stems.

This prevents having to install and maintain separate trellises or poles. It also looks very pretty to have gorgeous blooming vines and flowers mingling with the tropical foliage.

I’ve used my taller Alocasias to support hyacinth bean vines with beautiful success. The purple and white blooms against the mask plant leaves are a showstopper!

Attracts Pollinators

While grown mostly for their foliage, African mask plants will flower under the right conditions. The blossoms aren’t very showy, usually pale white or green.

But they do attract bees, hummingbirds and butterflies! So you get the added benefit of bringing in more pollinators to your garden when your Alocasias bloom.

I love seeing the busy buzzing activity when my plants flower. More pollination means more fruit and flowers on my other garden plants as well. An easy way to increase pollination without much extra effort!

Unique Texture & Design Element

The thick, heavy, almost glossy leaves of the African mask plant provide wonderful unique texture and visual interest. Their rounded shapes contrast beautifully with many other leaf forms and types.

I love to touch the substantial feel of the leaves and beautiful patterns of their veins. Such a nice change from thin, flat and feathery foliage.

In garden design, varying textures adds depth, dimension and interest. African mask plants are amazing for creating those textural differences in beds, borders and containers. Their waxy looking leaves catch the light for mesmerizing effects.

Tolerates Poor Soil

While African mask plants prefer rich, moisture-retentive soil, they will still grow in less than ideal dirt as long as it drains well. Their tropical nature means they can tough it out better than some fussier specimens.

This makes them a smart choice for problematic areas that have dense, compacted or nutrient deficient earth. Their formidable root systems help break up tightly packed soil. And as their leaves decompose, they enrich the surrounding ground over time.

While amendments and improved conditions are still beneficial, Alocasias are more tolerant than many other plants if you have troubled soil.

Gorgeous Poolside Planting

With their love of tropical conditions and moisture, African mask plants are absolutely gorgeous around backyard pools and water features. They thrive in the warm, humid microclimate these spaces provide.

I use my Alocasias along the pool fence line to create a luxurious tropical ambiance and a touch of exotic privacy. Their huge leaves and upright shape works wonderfully to screen views without total blockage.

Pool plantings also benefit from the humidity the African mask plants give off. And their toxin deters little critters that might otherwise congregate around water sources.

Curb Appeal Boost

If you want to instantly boost your home’s curb appeal, get some African mask plants! Their bold leaves and imposing shapes create serious visual impact along walkways, entries and borders.

They work beautifully as focal points by doorways or planted on each side of front steps. Guests can’t help but exclaim over their dramatic look.
